When you are ready to stop that thing which after engaging in, you hate yourself so much, do the following:
- Resolve to change.
- Tell someone about it: it should be someone whom you trust can help you. It could be your spiritual director, friend or relation.
- Forget about how long it will take you to stop it: you may stop it in days, weeks, months, or years...depending on your level of addiction.
- Be patient but determined to change: definitely, you will give in to your addiction occasionally, but do not lose hope. As much as possible, stay away from anything that will make you act otherwise. When you feel like giving up, talk to your confidant about it. "A problem shared" they say, "is half solved".
- Find out what your turn off is, in relation to the habit: This means discovering the thing that, if you remember it when you want to give in to your bad habit, you have a change of heart. It serves as a source of inspiration. It may be; thinking about your future, family and how much they depend on you, singing, going for a walk, cooking, writing, playing football etc.
- Find a positive habit you would replace the negative one with. When the thought of falling for your addiction comes to your mind, distract it by engaging in the positive new one(s) you wish to develop.
- With continuous practice, you will get over it.
