People of all ages and have greatly shown
concern about the issue of “Belonging” or being accepted as a part or member of a particular
social or political strata. You may find yourself in a particular environment,
but you would not know what to say, what to do, how to react, and so on. This
feeling usually makes the question, “How do I Belong?” pop up.
Below are 4 practical points on
how to solve the problem of acquiring the right attitude or doing the right
thing when you are out of your comfort zone.
1. Take your personal
health seriously:
Nobody wants to sit close to someone with a smelly mouth or body, let alone,
being identified or associated with a dirty person. So, you need to take good
care of your body if you want to be appreciated; starting from your hair, eyes,
ears, fingers and toe nails.
2. Dress accordingly: A lot of people take this for
granted. You should remember that the way you dress is the way you will be
addressed. This is a factor that affect people of all ages; both the children,
youth and the aged. When go out dressed however you wish, you may end up
realizing that you are either under-dressed or over-dressed for the occasion.
It simply leaves you embarrassed. So, wear clothes that you are comfortable in.
In a situation where you do not have many clothes, you don’t have to go out
borrowing. All you should do is just to maintain the ones you have; even if
they are torn, mend them. Make sure you always appear neat. You may end up
attracting some admirers.
3. Say only the necessary
things: Before you
start up a conversation with someone or a group of people, you need to study
them for a while; observe their mood. This may take a few seconds or minutes.
You should not just walk up to someone or a group of people and start saying
whatever comes to your mind. If you do, you would be going way out of line; be
it someone you just met or someone you have admired for some time. If it is in the case of one
person, you can start by complementing the person. The sex does not really matter,
but to an extent. You can start by saying with a welcoming smile/ look on your
face “Hi… This cloth looks so good on you”, “Wow! You look so beautiful” or
“You look so dull dear. Hope everything is all right? There… a conversation
starts.
But, if it is in the case of a group,
you also have to observe each one of them carefully. Know their topic of
discussion before cutting in, so as to avoid being given a look that would make
you feel like disappearing. Always be polite in all your speeches and gentle
while dealings with people.
4. Do not be scared: People do not bite; even the ones
that have mean and discouraging look. There is no better way of doing something
than actually doing it. No one can treat you like trash unless you act like
one. Be bold. If possible, be proud; but do not let it get to your head.
Respect yourself well enough as to get same from others. Always stand up for
yourself. You deserve to be happy wherever you are. It is your privilege.
If you do all these things, you will
absolutely command respect wherever you find yourself.
